Chapter 15

The One Where Things Go Sideways

I was going to puke, and not because I’d somehow teleported to an alternate location. Peter, or rather, Lucien DeFrost, was in my face, determined to suck on it. Not in the creepy vampire way, either.

“Stacia, I’ve never felt this way about a human before. My compulsion to taste your blood is overcome by my need to taste the rest of you,” not-Peter, the vampire said.

“Eww. Stop.” My word, his icy hands were everywhere.

“Damn it, I was afraid this would happen. I’m sorry, Penn. Are you okay?” Bobbie called down from the sky.

I self-assessed. “Yeah, I’m fine. Call off your fake boyfriend, would you?”

“Sorry!” She cleared her throat. “Lucien knew seducing Stacia would have to wait; dawn drew near. He smoothed his hand down her hair and stepped back. She affected him like no other, and he needed a moment before he could continue their trek.”

“Gross, Bobbie. Really?”

She ignored me and continued narrating. “Lucien guided Stacia through the woods for about twenty more minutes until they came to a small stream.”

“My love,” Lucian Not-Peter said. “Climb on my back. We must obscure your scent, otherwise you’ll lead the wolf to our door.” He chuckled at his own joke.

I rolled my eyes then climbed on his back. “Bobbie, I sure hope this is a means to an end.” I tried not to freak out. Not that piggyback rides were intimate, per se, but I was generally not a touchy-feely girl. Okay, okay. I was very touchy-feely with Tripp, but this guy had a very not-Tripp feel and a not-Tripp smell. I didn’t like it.

“I’m working on it. The original lines are literally appearing before me in bold print, so I’m having to make it up as I go along. I have to start over from scratch turning the plot around.”

“Maybe not all the way. You’ve established the beginning of the relationship between Stacia and Thorne; that gives him a different motivation for following us. Also, now that I’m here, I’ll follow your new lines. The vampire can still be in love with me, or whatever, but I don’t reciprocate.” My words tumbled as I bumped along on the vampire’s back.

“But that puts us back to him having to do something with you while he sleeps because he can’t trust you.”

“He won’t have to knock me out, though, because I can’t communicate with Gregorio telepathically. He’ll have to gag me. Um, or threaten me. I’m sure a threat will work just fine without having to resort to a gag.”

“Crap! Hold on, I need to check in with them. Tripp’s probably flipping out. Uhh…Lucien knew Stacia still resisted his charms. He would have to tie her up and gently gag her while he slept so she wouldn’t escape.”

“Hey!”

“Okay, hang in there. I’ll try to end the scene quickly.”

And then I was alone, clinging to the back of a stranger as he slogged upstream toward some jagged cliffs.
